Documenting South Australia’s algal bloom

Since 2025, I have documented South Australia’s harmful algal bloom through underwater filming, photography and aerial imagery. Working through Ocean Imaging and the Great Southern Reef Foundation, I record changes beneath the surface, revisit affected sites and use earlier footage to show what has been lost. My imagery, interviews and field updates help researchers, journalists and communities communicate the impacts, contributing to national and international coverage, including ABC Four Corners’ Toxic Tide.

My work also connects those images with calls for action. I joined the Great Southern Reef delegation to Parliament House in Canberra and speak in the media about the need for long-term monitoring to measure losses, track recovery and inform decisions. My broader advocacy includes protecting giant cuttlefish, kelp forests and less recognised marine species and habitats. I have also contributed to school resources with the Marine Discovery Centre and marine scientists, helping teachers and students understand the bloom and its effects on their coast.
